SOUTH AFRICA: DEMOCRACY AT RISK

To the ANC Council, the South African Government and legislators:
As citizens across South Africa, we call on you to protect our Constitutional commitments to accountability, freedom of information and the press, and to reverse the secrecy measures in the "Protection of Information" Bill and the "Media Appeals Tribunal". We urge you to ensure that intelligence agencies are held to account by public scrutiny, that secrets with a bearing on national security are determined by an independent panel appointed by Parliament and limited to the security sector, and that legitimate whistleblowers are always protected. We ask that any media tribunal be established as an independent body that is self regulatory. Our democracy was hard-won, and we will not give it up lightly.

South Africa's democracy is at risk -- unconstitutional secrecy measures are being debated that would block the media from acting in the public interest to expose corruption and would hamper public scrutiny of the government and security agencies.

Over 32,000 South Africans have already signed the urgent petition against the "Protection of Information" Bill and the "Media Appeals Tribunal", and the public uproar has pushed the government to rethink their approach.

The pressure is working, and if we ramp it up we could reverse the proposals. October 19th is Media Freedom Day and on the 22nd, Parliament will debate the bill. Let's double our numbers and ensure our call for democracy not secrecy is heard. The petition will be delivered directly to Parliamentary Committee members next week. Sign the petition below now and forward this message.
