Ales Bialiatski, chariman of Belarusian human rights organisation Viasna, has been in prison since 4 August 2011. In November, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison and confiscation of property, for alleged tax evasion. The sentence is, without doubt, related to Ales Bialiatski’s work for human rights in Belarus.

Ales' comment regarding the attention reveals his kind and humble nature:
“Such international support confuses me, I think that I do not deserve it. The only thing that reassures me is that these people do not just support me personally, but express their protest against the systematic violation of human rights. It is a clear and simple message to all Belarusians."
Ales Bialiatski has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice, his courageous and persistent activities for human rights have been recognized by numerous international awards.
