To Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, EU foreign ministers, US Secretary of State Kerry, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and Foreign Ministers across the region:

We, citizens from across the world, are horrified by the mass death sentence handed down to hundreds of Egyptian citizens in Minya. By all reports the trial has fallen short of the most basic legal standards and we call on you to formally oppose the ruling and call on Foreign Minister Fahmy to pressure his government for a fair trial. Egypt’s failure to uphold the fundamental standards of justice will lead to greater isolation globally and greater division internally.

Yesterday, a kangaroo court in Egypt sentenced 529 people to death in a lightning ruling after 45 minutes. This is the biggest mass execution ruling this century, but one man can stop the killings.

It was a political show trial -- all 529 are accused of rioting that killed one police officer and destroyed property, and their defence lawyers were banned from the final proceedings! The military government is using the firing squad to wipe out the political opposition.But there is growing evidence Egypt's Foreign Minister, Nabil Fahmy, has been able to interject in judicial proceedings when seen to have negative repercussions across the world. Governments are condemning the ruling, but let's make sure Ministers in the EU, US and the region clearly tell him to step in, or face isolation and financial penalties.

 This is not just about injustice, and the hundreds of lives and families that will be destroyed. If the world does not speak up against this persecution of political Islam, the consequences for Egypt and the world are beyond dangerous. FM Fahmy has to face the world on this barbarous ruling.
