Cooperation between the Benin State and the park bordering populations, supported by German development cooperation, made the Pendjari Reserve one of the last refuges for wildlife in West Africa and an internationally recognized model for participatory management of protected areas. Since November 2011, as a result of dubious decisions taken by Benin authorities, this cooperation has been systematically destroyed - with dramatic consequences: Poaching and ivory trade, illegal grazing and other offenses are increasing dramatically. Please ensure that the joint participatory management of protected areas in Pendjari Reserve can continue and that it can be monitored effectively in the long term to maintain the protection and sustainable use of this unique natural heritage.
