Stop Fracking off Newfoundland Coast

Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," is a relatively new, extremely controversial, and quite likely, environmentally devastating petroleum extraction method... And now it is threatening to bring potential devastation to a Canadian National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Black Spruce Energy Corp., partnered with Shoal Point Energy Ltd., is currently seeking approval from the Canadian-Newfoundland&Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (CNLOPB) to use this fracking technique mere kilometres from Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (not to mention a home to thousands of people!). A proposal has not yet been submitted to the government of Newfoundland & Labrador itself, so now is the time to act.
The United Nations has already expressed concerns to the Canadian Government on this issue, and with good reason. Fracking in the state of Pennsylvania has led to reports of water and air toxicity, as well as illnesses including respiratory problems, nausea, and headaches. A group of investigators from several universities are now investigating these reports and toxicity levels (see NY Times link below). Other communities affected by fracking have seen abnormally high cancer rates, unsafe drinking water, and hair loss in animals, among other problems. (http://ipsnorthamerica.net/news.php?idnews=3254)
Black Spruce Exploration's mission statement is itself disturbing, emphasizing acquisition and development of petroleum properties and maximizing corporate and shareholder investment, without any mention of responsibility to everyday citizens and our habitat.
We must let the governments of Canada and Newfoundland&Labrador know that Canadians and concerned global citizens won't allow this very controversial technique to be used in our home.
