Almaty is the largest city of Kazakhstan. The city suffers from air pollution and its effects to the health of the citizens. The last gorge near the city, which has preserved the purity of the air and the natural biological diversity in its original form – is Kok-Zhailyau gorge. Now this place which is also a part of the National Park is being threatened.
Currently Almaty City Council together with private companies is planning to build a ski resort there, even though Kok-Zhailyau is considered to be the center of the ecosystem that supports air and water balance of Almaty.
Landscape works, construction of buildings, roads, and thousands of cars, water consumption from mountain springs and rivers for the needs of the resort, felling of 27 hectares of forest, the invasion into the area of endemic plants and animals listed in the International Red List - all these actions will lead to an irreversible deterioration of the ecosystem of the city and the health of the citizens of Almaty.
The project initiators refuse to listen for the public and experts who want to stop the environmental disaster, embezzlement of public funds for the project of doubtful economic and social benefit, the illegal invasion to the specially protected area. The protest of the public is supported by one of the largest environmental organizations in the world - NABU.
In 2002 Ile-Alatau State National Natural Park was included into the tentative list of sites nominated for the status of UNESCO World Heritage. The potential resort contradicts the International Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, thus reducing the chances of the park to be included into the list. We are convinced that the status of UNESCO World Heritage would have attracted much more foreign tourists than the ski resort.

We encourage you to help us in the fight for the virgin nature! Our goal is to collect 100,000 signatures to prove that the promised 100,000 tourists are not coming to Kazakhstan for a ski resort in the National Park.
