Reinstate the Picnic Tables in Gill Banks, Ulverston

Ulverston Town Council, Cllr Colin Pickthall, Members of the Ulverston Town Land's Trust
For two years we had picnic tables situated beside a very pleasant area beside the stream and the Local Pottery and Flower Planters beside the Railings (see http://www.myulverston.co.uk/railings/) which has been featured in the internationally acclaimed Ceramic Review. These picnic tables were very popular as a place to rest, read a book, socialise, enjoy one's lunch if one worked in the town. They helped make what had been a stretch of road, used by a few vehicles, into an attractive mini park only a few hundred yards from the Town Centre and at the beginning of the Cumbria Way much enjoyed by tourists.
As the result of a complaint by, it is believed, only one person and despite the protests of residents who lived immediately above and nearby this location who were adamantly in favour of the tables: the two picnic tables were removed by The Ulverston Town Council as administrators of the Town Land's Trust on whose land these tables where located. The picnic tables were donated by a local resident and cost the town nothing. It was believed that the tables attracted irresponsible young people which was untrue. What did happen is that young people congregated on one occasion making some noise after the end of school exams a year ago. On being asked to move, these students then moved on elsewhere.
Local people found that the picnic tables provided a valuable and occasional social contact which promoted social integration between young people and adults who used the location as they stopped or walked their dogs up Gill Banks.
It is further signicant that at the time of the removal of the picnic tables there was little vandalism of the pottery suggesting the this socialisation between agegroups worked effectively. The police on being contacted had no objection to the presence of these picnic tables, the removal being entirely instigated by certain councillors on the Town Council.
