Premio Ilaria Alpi 2013 a Zeynep Kuray

Zeynep Kuray giornalista turca d'etnia curda scrive per il quotidiano socialista turco Birgün ed è inviata per l’agenzia stampa curda Firat News Agency. Il 24 Dicembre 2011 viene arrestata assieme ad altri 44 giornalisti nell’ambito del processo Kck. Rilasciata nell'Aprile 2013, viene indicata dalla Giuria del Premio Ilaria Alpi come la vincitrice del premio per la libertà di stampa Ilaria Alpi 2013. Così sembra ma in realtà la giuria del Premio fa inspiegabilmente dietro front in quanto la giornalista non può ritirare il premio personalmente (ha un processo a carico e non può lasciare la Turchia) e per ragioni di "visibilità" la Giuria decide di premiare qualcun'altro e di premiarla eventualmente in futuro solo nel caso in cui potrà lasciare la Turchia. E' una decisione grave, assurda, che getta una luce inquietante su un Premio intitolato ad una grande giornalista che ha perso la vita per la sua battaglia in difesa della libertà di parola.

Turkish journalist Zeynep Kuray, who has suffered persecution in her own country, will receive the prestigious international Ilaria Alpi Award only if she can attend the awards ceremony in Italy. If her government refuses to let her leave the country, then the jury has said it will be forced to give the award to someone else for reasons of ''visibility''. Kuray, 35, writes for the Istanbul-based socialist daily Birgun. She was arrested in December 2011 for her reports of violent repression of Kurds by the Turkish army. She was released in April 2013 but is not allowed to leave the country. The Unicredit jury (separate from the one that assigns the main award) said no. The Ilaria Alpi Jury decided to give the award to someone else. This is an absurd decision impoverishing the prize and the struggle for freedom of expression of journalist Ilaria Alpi, assassinated in Mogadiscio.
