India: Stop killer hospitals!

To Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab:

Now that the Punjab government has announced free neonatal care for all children up to 28 days after birth, we call on you to make this information widely available to the poor people who need it most. Posters in key languages along with help desks should be set up in all government hospitals so that patients know they have a right to free and good healthcare for their children.

India: Stop killer hospitals!

An innocent baby girl died in a Punjab hospital shortly after she was denied access to life-saving equipment because her parents couldn’t pay 200 rupees. Let’s act now to end this callous cruelty.

As a high-risk baby, she should have received free treatment -- but her parents didn’t know their rights. Aware of the public anger sparked by this cruelty, the Chief Minister, quickly announced free care for all newborns. But money is not enough to ensure this shocking tragedy doesn’t happen again. Let’s insist that the state’s health department publicise these new rules informing parents of their rights.

Sign this petition now urging the Punjab Health Department to set a precedent by putting up posters in all government hospitals announcing this free healthcare policy. Avaaz will deliver our message directly to the officials when 20,000 of us sign.
